With the first autumn leaves and cooler weather, many of us notice that summer sunbathing has left unwelcome traces on the face, neck and hands. As the tan gradually fades, previously unnoticed dark spots - hyperpigmentation - become more pronounced.
At the same time, modern dermatology stresses that pigmentation cannot be tackled successfully without a healthy skin barrier and a balanced microbiome. Why do these spots form, how are they linked to our skin's microbiome, and why is autumn the ideal time to begin a targeted, holistic renewal of skin tone?
What is skin pigmentation?
The natural colour of our skin, hair and eyes is determined by the pigment melanin. It is produced by specialised cells - melanocytes - located in the deepest, or basal, layer of the epidermis. Under normal conditions this process runs harmoniously, giving the face an even tone.
Melanin plays a critical biological role: it acts as our skin's natural protective shield, guarding cellular DNA from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. However, when exposed to certain triggers, melanocytes go into overdrive, and pigment accumulates unevenly, creating dark spots.
The most common triggers of hyperpigmentation
- UV radiation (sunlight): the main stimulator of melanin production. Excessive, unprotected sun exposure overstimulates melanocytes and throws them out of balance.
- Hormonal fluctuations (melasma): often called the ‘mask of pregnancy’, because changes in oestrogen levels directly stimulate melanocytes. Melasma is particularly persistent and prone to recurring.
- Post-inflammatory pigmentation: occurs after skin injuries, burns or acne breakouts, especially when inflammation is combined with sun exposure.
- Genetics and medication: some people are genetically predisposed to pigmentation, and certain medicines increase the skin's sensitivity to light, triggering the formation of spots.
Did you know? There is an important difference between freckles and sun spots (solar lentigines). Freckles usually appear in childhood and fade naturally in winter, when UV exposure is low. Sun spots, on the other hand, typically appear from middle age onwards as a result of long-term UV damage; they are larger, more sharply defined and do not fade on their own. They tend to appear in the same places on different people — where the skin is thinnest to begin with: the temples, the forehead, under the eyes and the backs of the hands.
Why is autumn the best time to improve skin tone?
In dermatology and aesthetic medicine, autumn and winter are known as ‘laser and peel season’. There are three fundamental, biologically grounded reasons for this:
- Lower UV activity: in the autumn months, solar radiation becomes considerably weaker. This means melanocytes are in a relatively calm state and are no longer receiving constant, aggressive signals to produce new pigment.
- Safe regeneration after treatments: the most effective solutions for deep pigmentation - such as targeted chemical peels or laser therapy - temporarily make the skin especially sensitive. - the bricks are the skin cells (corneocytes);

- Pronounced dryness, roughness and flaking.
- A strong feeling of tightness immediately after washing the face.
- An unnatural, ‘waxy’ or uncomfortably shiny appearance after exfoliation.
- Sudden sensitivity and stinging when using products the skin previously tolerated well.
If the skin barrier is damaged, all active ingredients (acids, retinol, vitamin C) should be paused for a time and the routine simplified, focusing on rebuilding the barrier's ‘mortar’.
The skin microbiome: the invisible ally of a healthy tone
The surface of our skin is home to billions of microorganisms - bacteria, viruses and fungi - collectively known as the skin microbiome. These microorganisms are not merely passive residents: they form a biological protective barrier, naturally maintaining a slightly acidic environment (around pH 5) that protects the skin from colonisation by pathogenic bacteria and from inflammation.
If the balance of the microbiome is disrupted (dysbiosis), pathogenic microorganisms begin to multiply rapidly, causing inflammatory conditions such as acne or rosacea, which often leave their mark in the form of uneven tone and post-inflammatory pigmentation.
Modern ‘microbiome-friendly’ skincare uses three main groups of ingredients to maintain this delicate balance:
- Prebiotics: substances that serve as nutrients - a ‘fertiliser’ - for our own beneficial bacteria (for example, Staphylococcus epidermidis), helping them naturally crowd out pathogenic microbes. An excellent example is beta-glucan, which also deeply hydrates the skin and soothes irritation.
- Probiotics: live microorganisms. However, keeping bacteria alive and active in a cosmetic formula is a considerable technological challenge.
